IMCC8 Lighthouse:
Global Conservation Stories

Powered by eOceans® — Evidence for Today’s World

Visit IMCC8 Lighthouse Project

What’s happening where you are?

Successes, setbacks, challenges, and change. What are you seeing at the ocean and coastal places you work at, live near, or care about?

The International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC8) brings together marine scientists, conservation practitioners, Indigenous and community leaders, policymakers, and others working toward a healthier ocean. It’s an opportunity to share knowledge, learn from different experiences, and build relationships across disciplines and communities.

We're excited to have been invited to contribute to the IMCC8 Lighthouse Programme — Indigenous Knowledge and Ocean Solutions.

The Lighthouse is an Indigenous-led, co-designed space for deep listening, different ways of knowing, stories, relationships, and shared responsibility for our ocean futures. It recognizes that stronger ocean solutions emerge when Indigenous knowledge, community experience, science, and practice can meet with respect and reciprocity.

Global Conservation Stories

Through eOceans, we're contributing Global Conservation Stories, a project that brings together contemporary observations and field notes from ocean and coastal places around the world.

What's working? What's changing? What challenges are people facing? What successes can others learn from? What matters to the people and communities connected to these places?

By bringing local perspectives together, we hope to highlight shared challenges and goals, celebrate successes, and create opportunities for people working on different issues to learn from and connect with one another.

You don't need to attend IMCC8 to contribute. Share what's happening where you are. We'll bring the project summary to the Lighthouse community and share what we've learned back with participants after the event.

How to participate

It takes just five minutes to contribute your first survey. You can contribute from one place, multiple places, or return to the same place at different times.

1. Download eOceans and create a free account

Download the free eOceans app and create your account. Complete your profile so others can learn a little about you and your work.

2. Join the IMCC8 Lighthouse project

Open the eOceans app, find IMCC8 Lighthouse — Global Conservation Stories, and request to join. Watch the video>

Once you're accepted, the project will be available in your app.

3. Choose a place to document

Visit an ocean or coastal place you work at or care about. This could be a marine protected area, reef, beach, mangrove, estuary, harbour, coastline, or another place that matters to you.

The survey should capture what's happening right now at that location.

4. Record your observations

All sampling methods and data types are welcome. Our recommended approach is a simple 5-minute Stationary Point Count.

Stay in one place for five minutes.
Record the animals you see.
Record human activities you observe.
Record pollution or other visible impacts.
Add your sampling method and relevant conditions.
Include a field note to explain what's happening, why the place matters, or the story behind your observations.

Your field note is an important part of the contribution. It gives context to the observations and helps others understand what you're seeing.

5. Save and upload

Save your survey and upload it through the app. Once uploaded, it will automatically be included in the IMCC8 Lighthouse project.

You can contribute additional surveys from different locations or return to the same place at different times. Each survey adds another perspective.

What happens to your contribution?

Your observations and field notes will contribute to the Global Conservation Stories project summary.

While the eOceans platform generates maps of observations, it automatically obscures exact location information to help protect species, locations, and privacy.

Respect community protocols, permissions, and responsibilities when documenting places and sharing knowledge.

Be part of the conversation — even if you can’t attend

Not everyone can attend IMCC8. But that doesn't mean their experiences, work, and perspectives should be absent from the conversation.

Help bring more places, perspectives, and experiences into the room. Share what's happening where you are, learn from others, and help us discover what we have in common.

Five minutes is all it takes to get started.
