Can animal censuses be trusted?

Not always. Our study found that non-instantaneous visual surveys can greatly overestimate mobile fish relative to stationary fish, since fast-moving animals enter the survey area after counting begins. This bias can significantly misrepresent population size, biomass, and community structure, with major implications for conservation and management. We explored how this affects interpretations of ‘inverted biomass pyramids’.
