Partially. Our global survey of 15 shark sanctuaries found slower shark population declines, fewer sharks in markets, and lower fishing threats compared to non-sanctuary areas. However, bycatch, ghost gear, habitat loss, and marine debris remain major threats, showing that sanctuaries help but are not sufficient alone—high-resolution monitoring and stronger management are urgently needed.
