Partially. Our study reviewed 11 global shark sanctuaries and found that while bans on commercial fishing and exports can reduce shark mortality, bycatch and lack of monitoring and enforcement limit effectiveness. Clear evaluation metrics and stronger regulations are needed to ensure these sanctuaries truly protect shark populations.
